HAVE YOU?

Dirty Looks, a monthly platform for queer and experimental film is thrilled to host the first-ever survey of work by Chris E. Vargas, a Bay Area artist and activist. Perhaps best known as OP issue 2 cover model and one half of the web series “Falling in Love … with Chris and Greg,” a sitcom about a queer odd couple—one liberal, one radical; one transgender, one not—Vargas has produced a body of work that is politically subversive, culturally acute and utterly hysterical. From post-apocalyptic LA bikers to “the first pregnant man,” Liberace to Bronski Beat, these works challenge the homonormative, queering pop culture and rewriting GLBTQ histories.

Beginning with Vargas’s first Super8 film, this program will explore the artist’s penchant for humorous impersonations and socio-political reinterpretations. Homotopia finds Vargas collaborating with Eric Stanley on a narrative short, in which radical queers crash the hypocritical wedding ceremony of a recent tearoom trick.Extraordinary Pregnancies explores the transphobic discourses parlayed through the media firestorm that surrounded the world’s first pregnant man, Thomas Beatie. In the video from which this program takes its title, Vargas enlightens various American landmarks with his trans body, begging of them the question, “Have You Ever Seen a Transsexual Before?” In both ONE for all… and Liberaceón, the artist portrays historically queer public figures (philanthropist Reed Erickson and showmanship himself, Liberace), rearticulating (rather comically) these icons relationships to queer politics and philosophical standpoints within their respective epochs. And, in the recent episode of “Falling in Love… with Chris and Greg”: Season Two, Chris and Greg compete against fellow artists to create the perfect work of queer failure, inserting themselves in Bravo’s reality TV show, “Work of Art.” Hint, it does not end well.

SHILO’S A DICK

by Editor's Pick on February 12, 2013

Most dudes dream of dick. By that I mean at one point or another most every trans guy has dreamt of having a dick of their own or having a bigger dick or having a dick in them. You get the point, guys like dick in someway or another. I myself spent the better part of my first years on T obsessing over it. Alas, I am cash poor and don’t want to have anymore surgery. So I searched for a dick that made sense. I don’t love packing without purpose. Mostly because if I’m gonna “do it” at the end of the day, I never know how to casually slip off my stinky, sweaty limp packer without feeling humiliated and utterly turned off. If I am gonna pack, I want to be able to fuck with that dick too. But I’m short and I wear skinny jeans, so I can’t exactly shove a donkey dick down there without looking obscene. by Editor's Pick January 23, 2013

TranSquat, an app meant for finding gender-neutral bathrooms where ever you are, is in the Apple iTunes App Store. And in fact, even though it has been in the Apple iTunes Store for a couple of weeks now, there has been no in-depth review; just notifications that it can be helpful. And it can. The [...]

Thoughts on TDoR from Australia

by Editor's Pick November 20, 2012

Today is Trans* Day of Remembrance, a time to reflect on the violence perpetrated against transgender people. It’s also a good time to acknowledge that the majority of people affected by anti-transgender violence and murder are trans women of colour, trans women of colour sex workers, lower class trans women, non-binary trans* POC, and non-binary/trans* [...]

The Cold War of Transgender Sports

by Editor's Pick October 19, 2012

By Ali Harris The status of trans masculine athletes participating and competing in sports at the present time is precarious at best. So many factors contribute to the experience of any athlete, and being a trans masculine person only further complicates this experience. The nature of these concerns fall into two major categories: Fairness to [...]

Becoming a man at the YMCA

Trans Dance: A Complicated Love

by Editor's Pick October 10, 2012

By Beck Heiberg Dancing is athletic art, demanding your full attention as an artist and athlete. Your body and mind have to be in sync. It can be hard navigating that while dealing with trans dysphoria and distorted bodily norms. But when gender and art play together, there are no boundaries. I am currently choreographing [...]

Victorious: The Trailblazers + Barnstormers pave the way

by Editor's Pick October 5, 2012

By Lee Dwyer Boston is a city of sports fans. Between the Pats, Celtics, Bruins, and Sox, there’s someone to root for in any season. During playoffs, even gay bars will often keep a screen tuned to ESPN. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Boston is the birthplace of the first (and second!) softball team dedicated to creating a [...]
