[DR. T ANSWERS] Bone to Pick

by Dr. T on April 19, 2012

Dr. T.

Hi Dr. T,

What, if any, are the long-term effects of taking testosterone on bone density? I’m at moderate risk for osteoporosis due to my family history, race, and stature.  But would testosterone increase or lower this risk?

Thanks!

Dr. T!

Hey Dr. T,

My boyfriend is trans, we’ve been together a while now, and we’ve chatted about the future and we both know we want kids at some point.  I was wondering what the options are for us if we ever wanted to have biological children?  I know its hard for him to thinking of never being able to have biological children of his own–he doesn’t want to carry, which is fine with me!  Bring on the maternity dresses!  But I’ve heard different things–from harvesting eggs to lab created sperm injected with DNA of the other partner-is that sci-fi talk!? Wondering if you could educate me a bit!

Thank you,
A Partner

Dear A Partner,

I’m sure your question strikes a cord with many of OP’s readers…planning for children is hard enough without having to figure out how it’s going to be physically possible! Lab created sperm injected with your combined DNA is, unfortunately, still experimental, at best. There are definitely real options available though, so don’t fret! Before I go into the specifics, let me first explain the basics of fertility treatments. In intrauterine insemination (IUI), donor sperm is injected through the cervix into your uterus during your body’s time of ovulation. In another option, in vitro fertilization (IVF), you are given hormone injections to stimulate your ovaries to produce more eggs, which are then taken out utilizing an ultrasound-guided needle through the vagina, and fertilized with donor sperm in a petri dish. You then take different hormones that prepare your uterus for pregnancy, and the best lab-created embryo(s) is/are implanted into your uterus.

[DR. T ANSWERS] Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome + Testosterone

by Dr. T January 19, 2012

Hello Dr. T! I am a 22 year old pre-everything transbloke who sincerely hopes that hormone therapy is in my future. I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome, which I’ve been treating for a few years with birth control. (Not the most ideal solution, but I didn’t know what else to do.) Do you know if [...]

[DR. T ANSWERS] Who Am I?

by Dr. T December 14, 2011

In honor of my 4 year Manniversary last week and Transgender Day of Remembrence last month (I know, I’m a little behind), I thought I’d veer off from the Q&A format and get a little more personal. Several readers have asked about my experience transitioning in medical school. So here goes… My medical school was [...]

Hey Dr T, I have a question about the effects of T on your chest.  I’m waiting for an appointment with my doctor to get started with some aspects of physical transition.  I want to pursue both top surgery and T but I’m not sure which order makes the most sense.  On the one hand, [...]

by Dr. T October 26, 2011

Hi Doc, I’ve been on T for 2 years now and have no issue growing a full fledged beard but for the life of me can only get sparse upper lip hair. My genetics for facial hair are all good. Is there any way to make my mustache grow better? If I grow my beard [...]

[DR. T ANSWERS] That’s so gay?

by Dr. T October 5, 2011

Hello Everyone! As you may have noticed, I had a brief interlude from blogging. I was at the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) and World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) Conferences in Atlanta. It was wonderful to be around like-minded researchers and clinicians working to better the lives of LGBTQI folks around the [...]

[DR. T ANSWERS] Muscle Spasms

by Dr. T September 14, 2011

Dear Dr. T, I have been on T (80 mg per week) for 10 weeks, and about 2 weeks ago I began to get muscle cramping/charley horses in my legs. I’ve never had trouble with muscle cramps, but now I have them quite regularly–with or without strenuous activity. Also, my legs (and to some degrees [...]

[DR. T ANSWERS] Hysto, and meta, and implants, oh my!

by Dr. T September 7, 2011

Dear Dr. T, I have a surgical question that I’m hoping you can help me out with. I’m in my mid-twenties, healthy guy, and am scheduled to have a laproscopic hysterectomy with salpingo-oopherectomy in the next few months. Since I’ve saved up the money, I was thinking of having a metoidioplasty within the next year [...]

[DR. T ANSWERS] Primary Care and Health Indicators

by Dr. T August 31, 2011

Hey Dr. T, When I started transitioning I had an endocrinologist that knew enough about trans-health to get me started.  Unfortunately, life has thrown me some curve balls and I’ve had to transition my care to a GP who has never treated a trans man.  Are there any current resources that we can share with [...]
